Costa Rica Entry Requirements for U.S. Travelers
Check current Costa Rica entry requirements for U.S. tourists, including passport validity, visa-free stays, onward tickets, proof of funds and yellow fever rules.
For a normal U.S. tourist trip to Costa Rica, you need a valid passport and proof of onward or return travel. U.S. citizens do not currently need a tourist visa for stays under 180 days, but immigration determines the period actually granted at entry. Requirements can change, so this page is checked against current official information and should still be rechecked before departure.
This guidance was last verified on September 19, 2026.
Passport requirement
U.S. State Department guidance says your passport must be valid for the duration of your stay.
Costa Rica's official entry requirements also require a valid, machine-readable passport or travel document.
Do not travel with a badly damaged passport.
Even when an expiration date appears technically sufficient, airlines and immigration authorities can refuse problematic documents.
Keep a digital copy separate from the physical passport, but remember that a copy does not replace the original for entry.
Do U.S. citizens need a visa?
For ordinary tourism, the U.S. State Department currently says a visa is not required for stays of less than 180 days.
That does not mean every traveler automatically receives 180 days.
Costa Rican immigration authorities decide the permitted stay when you enter, and official guidance says a shorter period may be granted.
For a normal 7-, 10- or 14-day vacation, this distinction rarely affects the itinerary, but it matters for longer stays.
Always leave by the date legally granted to you.
You need proof of onward or return travel
Costa Rica requires tourists to show that they will leave the country before their authorized stay expires.
For most vacation travelers, the return flight solves this automatically.
If you are traveling on a one-way ticket, continuing overland or flying home from another country, make sure you have acceptable proof of onward travel.
Official Costa Rican guidance recognizes approved commercial transportation such as a pre-purchased flight, bus ticket or cruise passage.
Keep the confirmation accessible offline in case airport Wi-Fi is poor.
Proof of economic means
Costa Rica's official entry guidance states that foreign visitors may need to demonstrate economic means of at least US$100 per month or partial month of legal stay.
Most short vacation travelers will not experience a complicated financial check, but the requirement exists.
Do not interpret this as the budget you actually need for Costa Rica.
It is an immigration entry requirement, not a realistic vacation-cost estimate.
Yellow fever certificate
A yellow fever vaccination certificate is required for travelers arriving from certain countries or risk areas.
Costa Rica updated parts of its yellow-fever policy effective August 31, 2026, making this a particularly important rule to verify shortly before travel.
If you are flying directly from the United States and have not recently been in a yellow-fever risk country, this usually will not be the issue that determines entry.
If your itinerary includes South America, Africa or another potentially affected country before Costa Rica, check the current official list and timing rules.
Do not rely on a years-old country list.
Is travel insurance required?
The current general tourist entry guidance we verified does not list ordinary travel insurance as a universal entry requirement for U.S. tourists.
That does not mean traveling uninsured is a good idea.
Medical care, evacuation, trip interruption and expensive prepaid tours can create substantial costs.
Choose insurance based on your risk and bookings, but do not confuse a sensible travel choice with an immigration requirement.
Do you need a health form?
Old pandemic-era Costa Rica articles can still appear in search results.
Do not assume historical COVID travel forms or insurance requirements still apply.
Use the current Costa Rica tourism-board entry page and your airline's current check-in requirements shortly before departure.
If a new public-health rule is introduced, the current official source takes priority over an old travel blog—including this page.
What about children?
Children need valid travel documents just like adults.
Rules become more specific when a child has Costa Rican citizenship or residency because Costa Rica has exit-permit protections for Costa Rican minors and some resident minors.
A normal U.S. tourist family whose children are not Costa Rican citizens or residents should still carry appropriate passports and any documentation required by the airline or relevant custody circumstances.
If nationality, residency or guardianship makes the situation unusual, confirm directly with Costa Rican authorities before travel.
Arrival airport does not change the national rules
Most U.S. travelers arrive through Juan Santamaría International Airport near San José or Guanacaste Airport near Liberia.
The national immigration requirements are the same in principle.
Your onward-ticket details may differ if you fly into one airport and out of another, but an open-jaw itinerary is not a problem when you can prove the onward departure.
That can be useful for a Guanacaste route.
How long should immigration take?
Do not plan a tight onward transfer around a specific immigration time.
Queues vary with flight arrivals, staffing and baggage delivery.
If you have a private or shared transfer after landing, give the provider your flight information and understand its delay policy.
For the start of our main route, see San José airport to La Fortuna.
Departure tax
Costa Rica's official travel resources say the departure tax is included in most airline tickets.
If it is not included, a fee may still need to be paid.
Check your airline ticket rather than assuming you need to find a separate airport tax counter.
This is another area where old travel guides can create unnecessary confusion.
What to check one week before travel
A simple final check is enough:
- passport is valid and undamaged;
- return or onward ticket is accessible;
- entry/visa rules still match your nationality;
- yellow-fever rules do not apply to your recent travel history—or you have the required certificate;
- airline requirements match the official Costa Rican rules;
- accommodation and first transfer confirmations are available offline.
For U.S. citizens on a short vacation, entry is usually straightforward when those basics are in order.
Because immigration rules can change, verify the official Costa Rica entry-requirements page and current U.S. State Department Costa Rica guidance again before departure.
